Patient Guidelines for a Comfortable Dental Experience: Nitrous Oxide and Oral Sedation
At our dental office, we offer sedation options to ensure your comfort during procedures. Two common methods are nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and oral sedation. Here’s what you need to know for each.
Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)
What to Expect:
• Nitrous oxide is a safe, mild sedative inhaled through a mask. It works quickly, helping you relax without putting you to sleep.
• You’ll remain awake and responsive, but feel more at ease during the procedure.
Before Your Appointment:
• No special preparation is required, but you can eat a light meal a few hours before your visit.
• Examples of a light meal: oatmeal, toast with peanut butter, a banana, applesauce, or yogurt. Avoid heavy, greasy, or spicy meals to reduce the chance of nausea.
After the Procedure:
• Nitrous oxide wears off quickly, so you can drive yourself home after the appointment.
• Most patients feel normal within minutes of removing the mask.
Oral Sedation
What to Expect:
• Oral sedation involves taking a prescribed medication, usually a pill, before your procedure to help you relax. This is stronger than nitrous oxide and may make you feel drowsy or even fall asleep.
Before Your Appointment:
• Follow your dentist’s instructions on when to take the medication.
• Arrange for someone to drive you to and from your appointment, as the effects can last for several hours.
• Avoid eating or drinking for at least 6 hours before your appointment, unless otherwise directed by your dentist.
After the Procedure:
• You may feel drowsy or groggy for several hours after the procedure. Plan to rest at home and avoid any strenuous activities.
Both sedation options are safe and effective, making your dental experience more comfortable. If you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out!
