Post-Extraction Care Instruction

After a tooth extraction, following the right care instructions is crucial for a smooth recovery. Here’s how to manage pain, bleeding, and healing:

Pain Management:

• To effectively manage pain, you can alternate between 600 mg of ibuprofen (Advil) and 500 mg of acetaminophen (Tylenol). Start by taking 600 mg of ibuprofen, then 3 hours later, take 500 mg of acetaminophen. Continue alternating every 3 hours as needed for pain control.

• Tylenol Dual Action is also an option. It combines acetaminophen and ibuprofen in one pill, but consult your dentist to confirm if this is appropriate for you.

Controlling Bleeding:

• Some bleeding is normal after the extraction. Bite down on the gauze provided for 30-45 minutes to control bleeding.

• If bleeding continues, use a damp tea bag and bite down gently for 20-30 minutes. The tannins in tea help encourage clotting and stop the bleeding.

Suture Care:

• If sutures were placed, your dentist will specify if they are dissolvable or require removal. Follow your dentist’s specific instructions on suture care.

Additional Tips:

• Cold foods are recommended to help reduce swelling. Consider eating items like yogurt, smoothies, or ice cream in the first couple of days after the procedure.

• Avoid rinsing, spitting forcefully, or using a straw for the first 24 hours to protect the blood clot.

• Stick to soft foods and keep your head elevated while resting to further reduce swelling.
